Jamaica is not only rich in culture, food, and stunning beaches, our island also has an incredible diversity of plant life. Many of the people that fly into Montego Bay and utilize our airport pickup service talk about how lush and beautiful the plant life is here, so in today’s blog we’ll be giving you some names to attach to the trees and plants you see here on your visit. Did you know that Jamaica is home to more than 200 species of flowering plants? It would take a very long blog series to cover all of them, and a very devoted gardener to read! We’ll narrow that list to five of our favorite flowering plants that are idigenous to our island.
Turkey Tangle Fogfruit
We love this flowering groundcover for its name as well as its delicate white flowers! It gets its name from the fact that it loves moisture and thrives in wet soil and foggy areas. They are also a great source of nectar, so butterflies are usually nearby.
This green-ish yellow flower is a twisting vine with apple-green foliage and dark purple fruits. The fruit is edible, and can also be used as a dye.
It’s cheating a little bit to say native orchids are one of our airport pickup company’s favorite flowers, since there are sixty species of native orchids in Jamaica. They are distinctive, though, and you’re sure to see some on your trip!
The Blue Mahoe (Hibiscus Elatus)
The Blue Mahoe is the national tree of Jamaica, and also happens to be a flowering plant creating stunning blue flowers each spring. It grows very quickly — like most plants here — and can grow to be 66 feet or taller.
Jamaican Croton (Joseph’s Coat)
These stunning tropical plants grow with leaves in nearly every color of the rainbow — orange, red, yellow, white, cream, purple, and black. And often you can see three different colors in a single leaf! They’re popular house plants, but here in Jamaica you can see them in their native environment from the window of our airport pickup car on the way to your Montego Bay hotel.
Yellow Poui Tree (Trumpet Tree)
There’s nothing quite like seeing the poui trees burst into yellow bloom during spring. It’s hard to miss these trees, which can grow up to 150 feet, and it’s one of the most beautiful flowering trees that you’ll see on the island. Plan your trip — and your airport pickup — between January and May to see these trees at their peak.
